Experiential Learning Collaborative
with VCC

Through the Experiential Learning Collaborative, Vermillion Community College staff, faculty, and students develop and lead classes for ECR participants in grades five through twelve. Classes focus on increasing academic success, helping participants acclimate to the college environment, and exposing them to new learning experiences. Participants attend classes at VCC giving many of them their first exposure to a college setting.

Examples of some of the classes students participate in:

• Physics Lab - Hands-on experiments to learn the properties of magnetism, movement, electricity, sound and vibration, and pressure
• Where in the World? - Exploring geography through the use of Google Earth software
Brain Gym - Identifying learning styles and how to use that style to do better in a class, concentrate, and take tests
Finding the Write Path - Learning brainstorming, organizing, and publishing techniques to help become a more efficient and successful writer
• Teacher/Student Communication 101 - Exploring strategies to effectively communicate with teachers to get the most from a classs, the help they need, and to solve problems
Join the Pack - Learning about wolf behavior, communication, and habitat at the International Wolf Center
• Explore Your Inner Artist - Learning basic techniques using a pottery wheel to create mugs, bowl and plates

Ten classes are held each school year - five classes for 5th and 6th graders and five classes for 7th through 12th graders.
