Annual
Service Project
The
annual service project is planned by a team of elementary
youth who are involved in ECR programs, high school
students from our Key Club and project
staff.
|
Planning
for the project includes visiting the park to assess needs,
brainstorming a list of improvements, writing letters to businesses
and organizations to request assistance and donations, and presenting
a proposal to the City Council.
The service project takes place after school in mid-May and
is open to all program participants. About fifty youth and adults
work together to complete the project. Participants include
Key Club members, Peace Patrol members, Homework Club participants, mentors and their youth, peer mediators, parents and community
volunteers.
Participants pick up trash and branches, rake, haul leaves and
twigs to a collection site for composting, clean the pavilion,
paint play equipment and buildings and build flowerbeds. One
year, they arranged for the high school trades class to construct
and install picnic benches.
